    The Social Side of Geocaching

I started geocaching as something cheap to do with my son, who was only 4 at the time. I was newly divorced, broke, and trying to make sense of my life. When I discovered geocaching, it seemed to be perfect. My son and I could go out on treasure hunting adventures together! For free! For the first year and a half, geocaching was something he and I did when the weather was nice or when we went somewhere on vacation. I had a large percentage of out-of-state finds that first year. My son and I would visit family in Ohio and West Virginia and go out and explore the area…

Attending a Geocaching Mega Event: 10 Planning Tips

Geocaching is so much more than just finding hidden containers and signing a log. There’s a whole social side to the hobby! Most geocachers love getting together with others who share the same love of the activity, compare notes, plan outings, etc. What better way to do all that than by attending a Mega event? A Mega event is usually an annual event with more than 500 attendees. There are many different types of Mega events, and each one has its own draw. Most are themed, have other side events, have contests and prizes, and have new caches hidden for the purpose of the attendees to find. They can certainly…

10 Father’s Day Gifts for Geocachers

Not sure what to get that special geocaching dad in your life for Father’s Day this year? Last month, I put together a list of Mother’s Day gifts for geocachers. It only seems appropriate that I do the same this month for Father’s Day. Most of the items on the Mother’s Day list would definitely be appropriate and appreciated by your favorite geocaching dad, so be sure to check out that list as well. I’m adding ten more items with a geocaching dad in mind. Any of these would make terrific Father’s Day gifts, or birthday gift, or milestone gift, or just because! (contains affiliate links) 1. Start with a card…

    Geocaching Promotion: Hidden Creatures

Geocaching.com has announced another upcoming souvenir promotion! We started seeing hints a few weeks ago, and this week more details have emerged. The promotion is Hidden Creatures and looks to be a bit simpler than the last couple promotions. Unlike previous promotions, there are no Friend League points and no crazy algebraic equation based on cache type and favorite points used to calculate points. This promotion is pretty much as simple as you can get. Find a cache, earn a souvenir. The more caches you find, the more souvenirs you earn for your geocaching.com profile. That’s it. In the past, these souvenir promotions have involved complicated formulas and points and friends.…

10 Last Minute Mother’s Day Gifts for Geocachers

Seriously, at least twice a week I make a comment about how fast time goes. Can you believe next weekend is Mother’s Day already? That means we’re only a few weeks away from this year being half over. How does that happen? Yes, I know, we’ve been busy geocaching (and other stuff). But if you’re like me, that means you don’t yet have a gift for that special geocaching mother in your life. I’ve tried to help you out and put together a list of a few items that will be sure to make her day! She’ll think you put a lot of thought and effort into it, and no…

    Your Favorite Geocaches

You've seen the list of my favorite geocaches. Now it's time to reveal the list of your favorite caches! Thanks to everyone who contributed! This list includes geocaches from around the world, and I think a few have been added to my bucket list. Which of these have you found?

My Top 30 Favorite (active) Geocaches

Favorite points. Geocachers are granted one favorite point per every ten finds. Do you award them as they are intended? Or are you like me and have hundreds stockpiled? Like I’m waiting for that cache find that was just a bit better than all the others. I don’t know why I have so many saved up, other than the fact that I really don’t find that many that are truly spectacular and worthy, in my opinion. I’m fast approaching 10,000 finds (that’s crazy!), so I have nearly 1,000 favorite points to award. I have handed out only about half of what I could. I took the time to scroll through…

    Stories of Foolish Geocaching

A couple of weeks ago, I had the privilege of sitting in on Episode 325 of the geocaching tech podcast, GeoGearHeads. This weekly show has been around in its current form since 2011 and is hosted by DarrylW4 and ChrisOfTheNorthwest with a revolving third and sometimes 4th guest host. Scott and I have appeared a few times to talk about various subject matters. This week’s topic was “Foolish Cachers III.” I don’t think it was a coincidence that we were asked to join them for this particular topic, since we have a few stories about doing what some may consider foolish things while caching. We did tell a couple of…

Earn Extra Cash While Finding a Cache

We all walk, especially when geocaching, so why not use those steps to earn some extra cash while finding a cache? Here are three apps that I use to earn a little extra money each month.   Achievement Achievement is a really simple way to earn some extra cash based on your steps. Link apps such as Fitbit or Apple Health to the Achievement app to earn points that can be redeemed for cash. The more steps you take, the more points you earn. Link more apps and earn more points. Logged workouts through MyFitnessPal earns points as well. Plus, there are occasionally special offers to earn you bonus points,…

How to Host a Geocaching Event – Who, What, When, Where, & Why

One of the things I love about geocaching is its community. And there is no better way to bring that community together than to host a local geocaching event. A geocaching event is simply a gathering of geocachers. It’s a great way to meet new cachers and catch up with old caching friends. A geocaching event could be a simple meet and greet. It could be a regularly scheduled get together, such as a Friday Lunch Club. Maybe you’ll be on vacation and would like to meet some local geocachers while you’re there. It could be a themed event. I have hosted events called For the Love of Caching in…
